Hist by Annabel and Monique

“Hist” by C.J Dennis

“Hist” is a delightful children’s poem written by C.J Dennis in 1921. He published this extraordinary poem in a book named “Roundabout” which was published in 1935.

“Hist” is a poem which tells the story of two children making their way home through Possum Park. On their interesting journey they encounter many mysterious, scary sounds and creatures, but it turns out as though they are not one bit scary at all, it’s just the dark night that makes them seem that way. The creative word and the rhythm of the rhymes capture the reader in C.J’s fantastic poem, and just the first paragraph urges them to read on.

We immensely enjoyed reading this poem ourselves as it really captures what it would be like to travel home in the dark. It also had great beat and rhyme, and that’s what makes a poem so wonderful to read.
